The Blockchain is something everyone has heard about and understands it is used to host the digital currency Bitcoin. Other than that, most of us don’t really understand what it is, how it works, and what applications it can be used for in the future of real estate. In today’s episode, we will be chatting with Marina Reznik a partner with Ubitquity, a company utilizing the blockchain to securely record and track real estate title and transactions.

3D printing of homes is a futuristic idea and is very much at the beginning stages of this technology. 3D printing itself is not new. It has been used for many years, especially in manufacturing for creating small scale prototypes of products in the design stage. Small scale is the key work here. The idea of 3D printing something as massive as a home is quite the different beast. The technology and process is basically the exact same process that would be used in smaller scale 3D printers. It should easily translate into giant sized printers for home construction. And it has, in the handful of printed homes and buildings that have been erected around the world so far.

How fun are Drones!? Iphones kinda made us feel like we’ve made it to the Jetsons era, but personal flight devices is really what we needed to make us feel like we’re in the future. I wonder why we never saw drones on a Star Trek? But Star Wars knew. 😉 (Remember the little round levitating droid helping Luke practice with the light saber?) So now that we're finally embarking on the future, what can we expect from these little guys, in and around our homes, neighborhoods and cities? As we are very much on the beginning edge of the drone revolution, it’s hard to really grasp the uses we can put them towards. Just like we could not guess the sheer number of apps and the many uses we put them towards on our mobile device when the iPhone first came out, similarly we can't yet get the full picture of how many ways we’ll use these newly opened up 3 dimensions now available to us.

Tiny Living is a movement taking place in many developed countries. It involves people making a conscious choice to live in small homes. Some choose this out of necessity, as affordability of housing in many cities and towns is increasingly becoming impractical. Others choose it for long term financial reasons, not wanting to invest hundreds of thousands of dollars in their housing over their lives. We also have those drawn towards Tiny Living, due to the simplicity of it. Small homes equals small storage spaces, therefore less possessions.

Urban Farming can be as simple as growing vegetables in pots on the balcony, to a full scale farm in urban settings, and everything in between. The relationship between ourselves and our food has become more meaningful in the past decade or so, and will only grow (Pun? Yep) more prominent as we continue to learn how the lack of nature in our daily lives affects us. Bringing food production to local levels offers improvements by allowing people to know their farmers and how their food was grown. It reduces the carbon footprint of the farming process, with less transport necessary and makes use of otherwise unused real estate.(Such as building roof tops) We are just at the beginning of this flourishing movement. (Pun intended. Why doesn't any one like puns!) It is sage ( Yeah. Good one?) to look at the future effects urban farming may have on communities and future housing.
  • Co-Housing and the Future of Real Estate

    Listen LIVE
Today's show is about the emerging lifestyle of Co-Housing. Co-Housing are purpose built housing developments with the focus on community. As humans, we evolved to be part of a village. With population growing exponentially over the past couple of centuries, the village has disappeared in the areas where most of the population lives. This has created a sever lack of connection with neighbours, which is vital to what has traditionally made us feel whole, protected, having a place, having value and a sense of belonging. Society has tried to replace this with family, though often families are spread out across many thousands of miles around the world. We try to connect through work and our colleagues, but with the movement from career to career and company to company which is the norm nowadays, there is little loyalty or connection to be had at the work place.
  • Building the Home of the Future

Today's show is about Building the Home of the Future. It is actually just the first of a few different shows we will have about Building the Home of the Future, as it is a large and exciting topic and we can only cover a portion at a time. Today's theme is about In-Factory construction. We have two guests today, each a progressive home builders that constructs their homes In-Factory. We will chat with Barry Maedel of CLiCK Modular Homes out of British Columbia in Canada and Marc A Bovet, with Bone Structure out of Quebec, Canada. My personal favourite feature about In-Factory construction, is the carefully controlled environment. The workers are familiar with the product and trained in detail to build these specific homes, eliminating the situation of different trades completing only their branch of the job, with little knowledge of what the many other hands are doing. With In Factory builds, there is increased communication between the workers as the indoor, contained environment allows for easier communication than working on a large construction site.

  • An Intro to The Future of Real Estate

    Listen LIVE
On today's show, we will be introducing The Future of Real Estate radio show. We’ll chat about what topics and themes that will be explored over the next many weeks of the show. We’ll discuss who the show is for, and why it will be useful to listeners. We have two informative and entertaining guests today to share with us their perspective on what we should be discussing in the upcoming shows and why. Real Estate over the decades has changed very little. Our neighborhoods are still designed relatively the same. Much of the materials we use now were the same 50 years ago. We still buy and sell our homes in much the same way. Even what people want in their homes hasn’t changed much. Every aspect of these factors are on the precipice of transformation. Everything from how a home is built, what materials are used, the process of buying and selling property, how communities are designed and even what people want out of their housing, are all on course for revolution.
